Toddlers are the miniature drunks who keep us laughing. One minute they’re grinning ear to ear, pointing to their bellies, and mooing like cows. The next, they’re hysterically crying. Sometimes it makes sense, like they fell down, they touched something too hot, or they’re hungry. Other times, not so much…
I asked my friends to tell me their best tales of toddler trauma, and now, for your reading pleasure, here are reasons why your toddler may be crying:
“My husband had to go poop and wouldn’t let her come watch.”
“I broke her clementine into segments, as per her request, but then couldn’t put them back together again.”
“I talked to my husband after my toddler told him and I to talk to each other.”
“She ate a tomato slice and then realized it tasted like tomato.”
“Spilled milk… literally.”
“She gave me a book to read to her, so I did.”
“She gave her bracelets to her friend and then was upset that her friend had them.”
The moral of the story is this: Toddlers are crazy. Certifiably nuts. We can do what we can to try to understand them. Keeping them fed, well-rested, and climate-controlled can often contain the chaos. But meltdowns are unavoidable. Your toddler will be unreasonable. Your toddler will be stubborn. Your toddler is trying to make sense of the world around her, even when it seems like she is making no sense at all. Don’t try to reason with a toddler — it simply won’t work. Just go with the flow, cherish the moment, and think about how you can add your toddler’s woes to the list. Even though they drive us crazy, we love them anyway. Because they’re cute, and they point to their bellies, and they moo.
