I have a confession to make: I love making Halloween costumes for my kids. I really get into it. I’ve been known to use lots of hot glue and make multiple stops at Michaels to get a costume just right. I’ve often wondered why I don’t just head over to Costco or Target and pick up something easy. I wouldn’t have the self-imposed stress of a looming deadline or waste countless hours Googling “cool kids costumes.” But alas, I subject myself to it every year. If you have this same affliction and are looking for inspiration, look no further. I’ve put together a small selection of pretty cool costumes — enjoy!

Patriot love taken to the next level.

For a mere $45 your child could look like Tom Brady — starting at size 4. OK, I admit that you aren’t “making” this costume per se, but come on, this is pretty special and I’m fairly certain you can’t get it at Costco.

Masked Owl

Easy and ridiculously cute. Can you ask for anything more?

I’ve actually followed Martha’s instructions and made this costume, and it was a huge success. Plus, all it takes is some felt and a hot glue gun, and — if you’re really crafty — you can sew the pilot’s hat. But that’s only if you’re really crazy, like me. Otherwise, feel free to purchase a little pilot’s cap at a retailer near you.

Anna Wintour

Amazing.

Who cares if your kid doesn’t know who Anna Wintour is! This is the coolest costume ever! It’s amazing, and I commit to transforming my daughter into Anna Wintour as soon as her hair is long enough.

Capes. Dress them up or dress them down. A no-fail Halloween staple.

What kid doesn’t like superheroes? It works for a girl or a boy, it’s easy to make, and it involves a glue gun — which I love.
