When I was a child, my mom packed my siblings and I homemade, healthy school lunches every day. Now, as a mom, I find myself wondering how she did it? I certainly took it for granted at the time. Every morning I cringe, trying to think of healthy things to pack and praying my children will eat them. Let’s be honest, it is painful to pack lunches for school.
Many parents think it’s easier to have their children buy lunch at the school. But at our elementary school (which we adore), there aren’t many healthy options. Students always have the option of a bagel or peanut butter and jelly — the safe school lunch — and that is what most of them choose. Also, the process of buying school lunch cuts into the already-short time they have to eat. I know my son barely has time to finish his packed lunch, never mind waiting in the lunch line!
Enter Nomsly — healthy, creative, locally packaged lunches for school-aged children. Delivered to your front door.
Why didn’t I think of this? It was founded by a local dad and his friend as they commiserated over the challenges of healthy eating. I was intrigued.
My family was lucky enough to try Nomsly out for a test drive last week. The two drivers, ages 3 and 6, happen to be very picky food connoisseurs. When our package arrived Saturday afternoon I had the kids help me unpack the lunches into the fridge, and they were actually excited! The lunches come in plastic containers that are recyclable (win!) and fit perfectly into their Pottery Barn lunch bags. The kit also includes stickers, and the kids dove right in.
The lunches are packed on ice so you don’t have to be home at the time of delivery, which is also pretty awesome. And one or two times a month they include an insert that highlights an ingredient in a meal for that week or a local farm they are sourcing from. It helps to include the kids so they have a better understanding of their food and where it is coming from — another major plus!
If you had asked me before this test drive if my children would try pesto pasta salad and falafel, I would have absolutely said no way. But there was something about these “special” lunches for the kids that made them both want to try new foods. And they liked them! Each meal consists of a main item (turkey roll-up, pasta, falafel) and a side of a vegetable and a fruit. Each day they were excited to see what they were bringing to school. It was such a relief not having to worry about what to pack every morning and to finally see some variety in their lunches.
Nomsly delivers to most of eastern and northern Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and portions of Vermont at this time. Please check out their website for more info! Use the code BOSTONMOMSBLOG to try Nomsly out for a week for FREE!
