If you have more than one child, you know how challenging it can be to have quality time with each of your children. The guilt. Oh! The guilt! I found after the birth of my second child that the reality of having more than one was starting to sink in. I was going to have to “balance” and “multi-task” much better than I had previously been doing. And I felt divided, torn between my two children. Yes, it’s true that your love expands when another child arrives, but it’s still not the easiest thing to maneuver right out of the gate. How to give enough attention to each child?

I could see the effect it had on my son. My solution was to start taking my son on dates. Just me and him. It could be as simple as going to a coffee shop or as elaborate as going to the “Nutcracker” together. Boston has many charming options for taking your kids on one-on-one dates. Here’s a few I’ve found to be pretty great and extra special for bonding.

L.A. Burdick hot chocolate

Especially in the winter, who wouldn’t go for a lovely, creamy, hot chocolate? Snuggle up by the front window, sip your chocolate, and watch the world go by…

MFA playdates

Great for kids under 4, this satisfies toddler and adult needs. Surrounded by the beautiful art and architecture of the MFA, you can color in the main foyer on the floor, learn about art together, and then take a peek at that exhibit you’ve been meaning to see. The MFA hosts two a month, with new Saturday dates!

Top of the Hub

Who doesn’t feel extra special when they’re at the top of the world looking out at our beautiful city? I can see it now, me with my cocktail, my son with his hot chocolate. Be sure to make a reservation — especially if you want the extra-swanky views.

Paint your own pottery

Create a masterpiece together! A few places to check out are Made by Me in Cambridge, Clay Room in Brookline, and Clay Dreams in Arlington.

Take in a show

Wheelock Theater offers behind-the-scenes tours for tickets holders, elevating your date to VIP status. The Puppet Showplace Theater is a Brookline institution and a magical place to experience as a child (and as an adult, too).

Aer Nail Bar and MiniLuxe both do junior mani/pedis for the under-10 set at a reduced price.

Movies and popcorn

It’s a classic, and there’s kind of no better combo. Unless ice cream is involved, then that would be perfect, wouldn’t it?

Have you tried the Kroc? It’s located in Dorchester, and I’m hearing nothing but good things about this place. Go on a swim date with your little one — it’s the largest indoor water park in Boston! I’m talking lazy river, water slides, and a bubble bench (whatever that is, but who cares, it sounds amazing!).

Sigh, I love anything rooted in the past, and sitting at the counter and enjoying an ice cream sundae or milkshake with your little one is definitely one of those moments to stop and appreciate being a parent. Here’s a few to check out:

South Shore: KC’s Burger Bar in North Attleboro

Newton: Rox Diner (also in West Roxbury)

Downtown: South Street Diner. Built in the ’40s, this is a classic!
