New England weather, you are too much. A few weeks ago when it was pushing 70 degrees and I was walking home from a day at the playground, I saw crocuses! Those little purple flowers sent me daydreaming of all the wonderful activities and events in Boston that celebrate spring. Then, we saw a mid-March blizzard — and the piles of snow are still lingering. But let’s focus on the celebrations of spring that will be here before we know it (and also on flip-flops, iced coffee, and not bundling my toddlers into hats, coats, and mittens).

34th Annual MayFair

MayFair is a fun-filled spring celebration in Harvard Square that will take place on Sunday, May 7. MayFair is an amazing way to spend a Sunday. The celebration features live music, family-friendly activities, lots of food, and my personal favorite, “Chalk on the Walk” which features incredible chalk drawings on the sidewalk.

“Duckling Day” parade

This year’s Duckling Day parade will take place on Sunday, May 14, at 10 a.m. The parade celebrates the beloved children’s book “Make Way for Ducklings” by Robert McCloskey and makes its way through Boston Common and the Public Garden, ending at the famous ducklings statue. Families can watch the parade or sign up to participate in the parade for a small fee.

Easter events

There are many fun family-friendly Easter events going on in and around Boston. Check out our roundup of Easter activities here.

Farmers markets

We are lucky to have several indoor farmers markets around Boston during the winter, but there’s something about a farmers market outside that I just love! Farmers markets will be returning in the spring, and I can’t wait. My kids like to help pick out fruits and veggies at the grocery store, so I know they will enjoy outdoor shopping this year. Some of my favorite markets are in Copley Square, Brookline, and the South End Open Market. You can find a farmers market near you on the Mass Farmers Markets website

Kids consignment sales

Spring cleaning means spring consignment sales will be starting up. I love a good yard sale and often find really good deals on new-to-us toys, books, and baby gear. Some really large sales in the area include the LexFUN sale on Saturday, May 20, in Lexington and the Massachusetts Mothers of Twins Association sales on April 8 in Winchester and April 22 in Sudbury.

Lilac Sunday at Arnold Arboretum

This year, Lilac Sunday will be May 14. Not only are the lilacs at the Arboretum gorgeous, they smell amazing and are one of my favorite signs of spring. During Lilac Sunday, there will be family-friendly activities and food vendors at the Arboretum, and there are endless trails for walking and getting energy out!
