Doughnuts are one of my favorite treats. They’re decadent enough that I only really want to eat a few a year, and they’re so easy to share. Plus, they pair amazingly well with both cold milk and hot coffee — aka the go-to beverages of toddlers and parents everywhere. Also, in my experience, no one ever turns down an invite to go try a new doughnut with you! It’s one of our family’s favorite things to do when hanging out with new friends. Here are 10 must-eat Boston donuts area to inspire your next sweets-filled adventure:
Union Square Donuts
Yes, Somerville’s Union Square is the ultimate in hipster doughnuts — they’ve even earned national recognition from the likes of the Food Network, Fodor’s, and The New York Times. But it is all deserved: No one does a unique flavor better. The maple bacon is a fan favorite, but I’m partial to the lemon.
Twin Donuts
Twin Donuts in Allston’s Union Square is the perfect stop if you’re craving a more substantial breakfast with your doughnut. The pastries are great and the breakfast combos are even better. You can also find Twin’s goods at Cafe Mirror and Brighton Cafe, both located in Brighton and owned by the same family that took over Twin Donuts 15 years ago.
This shop in the South End is also tops among hip, artisanal doughnut lovers. The flavors rotate, but you can always find something to tickle your fancy — like chocolate ganache.
Gail Ann Coffee Shop
This Arlington favorite serves up big, buttery, yeasty, affordable classics.
Anna’s Hand Cut Donuts
Anna’s is known for their jelly sticks, which is a fun twist on the round doughnut. Yum!
Lyndell’s Bakery
Lyndell’s, which has been in business in Somerville since 1887, is another no-frills, old-school bakery with no seating. FYI, the doughnuts are so tasty here that they normally sell out on weekends by 11 a.m.
Kane’s Donuts
Whenever I mention doughnuts in Boston, people rave about Kane’s. It’s totally worth the drive to Saugus for an apple cider, pumpkin, or eggnog doughnut (all seasonal flavors) made from scratch with local ingredients. And bonus! Kane’s recently opened a tiny expansion in downtown Boston. Hours and selection are more limited than the Saugus joint, but the doughnuts are just as divine.
Donut King
I’m partial to classic doughnuts (like a honey dipped or a real New England old fashioned) and Quincy’s Donut King satisfies both.
Flour Bakery
Doughnuts are a Sunday-only treat at Flour, but they’re oh-so worth the wait. Go for the vanilla — you won’t be disappointed.
